HOLDEN STATESMAN 4D SEDAN (1991-1994)
THE Statesman matches the Fairlane in every area with the advantage of better handling from the independent rear suspension. Equipment is similar to the Fairlane with the bonus of a driver's airbag. The 3.8-litre V6 has enough power (130kW) to equal the Ford's performance while using slightly less fuel.

HONDA LEGEND 4D SEDAN (1986-1991)
THE Legend combines advanced engineering and excellent build quality with lots of equipment, including anti-lock brakes and a sunroof. Interior space isn't so competitive here but there is ample room for five adults. The 130kW 2.7-litre V6 is smooth and fast once it winds up but can't compete here torque-wise.

NISSAN MAXIMA 4D SEDAN (1990-2001)
THE under-rated first Maxima struggled to find buyers here. It has similar interior space to the also front-drive Legend and is well-equipped, including a gimmicky touch-pad entry system and driver's airbag from 1993. Power comes courtesy of a smooth 122kW 3.0-litre V6 coupled to a four-speed automatic.

VOLVO 760 GLE 4D SEDAN (1983-1990)
THE rear-wheel drive 760 GLE is spacious, strong and safe, as reflected in that unmistakable Volvo styling. Equipment levels include leather trim and, from 1988, anti-lock brakes. Though not very powerful or economical, its ancient 108kW 2.8 V6 is durable and reliable. The model lived on as the 960 until 1998.
