THE most car-like of the bunch, offering the same, dependable V6 engine and running gear as VS Commodore models. Consequently, refinement, fuel consumption and performance are class-leading. Cabin far more modern and roomy than Falcon. Suffers inferior payload capacity (710kg).

TOYOTA HILUX P/UP (1997-2001)
ALL-new Toyota has a strong following thanks to its pricing and rugged no-nonsense ability to haul loads - up to 1000kg. The 2.7- litre, four-cylinder engine, although gutsy and refined, is overshadowed by Australian sixes, as is interior comfort and sheer space.

MITSUBISHI TRITON CLUB CAB UTILITY (1996-2001)
GUTSY and refined, the 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine - shared with Magna and Nimbus - is also economical. Single two-seater ute body unavailable so four-seater cab-body closest on price. A tough workhorse - payload 1060kg - with nimble handling and a good ride.

HOLDEN RODEO P/UP (1995-1998)
THERE is good performance, ride and handling from the 2.6-litre, four-cylinder Rodeo. The payload of 1000kg beats big brother Commodore. Cabin space is a little tight but functional, although quite dated.
