THE Laser uses a power-assisted rack and pinion steering system that provides variable assistance according to engine speed. While the previous generation Laser/323 utilised a clamp-style rack mount, the current uses a more rigid bush set-up which Ford claims offers more precise and responsive feedback to driver input. Improved responsiveness and reduced friction were also targeted with the use of a sheetmetal support yolk, as opposed to plastic. A quick-response steering gear ratio of 15.0:1 is used - the same as found on the SR2 and all other Lasers - and the turning circle is 10.4 metres.
