AS the "2" in the name suggests, a 2.0-litre engine powers the SR2. Driving the front wheels, the transversely mounted DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder "Mazda 626" engine produces 98kW of power at 6000rpm and 178Nm of torque at 4500rpm. Engine features specific to this model include a vertical inertia charging system incorporated into the intake manifold to ensure high output over the entire engine-speed range. A knock sensor is used to improve torque and fuel efficiency, though premium unleaded petrol is called for. Official government fuel economy figures point to 9.5L/100km on the city cycle and 6.6L/100km on the highway.
