Kids Under Cover goes rallying

BY TIM NICHOLSON | 23rd May 2014

AUSTRALIAN not-for-profit Kids Under Cover is auctioning an exclusive rally day at one of the country's leading rally driver's private properties in a bid to raise funds to battle child homelessness.

The special drive day will take place at rally driver Wal Lee's private property known as Wally's World in Whitlands, about an hours drive north of Mansfield in Victoria's high country and involve a “full day of hair raising, gut wrenching, rattle your bones, navigator seat action through the bush”.

The day will include rides in a selection of vehicles from a classic Fiat Abarth and an old Holden Commodore skidding around an open paddock to drives in some all-wheel drive turbos.

Wal Lee will be on hand with fellow rally driver David Lethlean to drive the various cars on the day which takes place on Monday May 26.

Last year's Victorian Rally Champions, Tristan Penhall and Jolie Middleton have also generously donated their cars for the day.

There are four exclusive packages valued at $1000 each available to bid for as a part of the auction that will be sold to the highest bidders, with entries closing at 5pm on Friday May 23.

Kids Under Cover supporter and leading business coach David Howells said the idea behind the rally day was to raise awareness about youth homelessness as well as funds in a less traditional way.

“Rather than rely on asking my network to donate cash like they do for so many other charities, we wanted to be more innovative so, by introducing my contacts in the rally world to Kids Under Cover and having them donate their time to support this great cause, we’re able to offer motoring enthusiasts a priceless experience of rally driving with some of the country’s best drivers,” he said.

“Kids Under Cover is one of those organisations, that tends to fly under the radar with its extraordinary work in preventing youth homelessness by building homes and complimenting this with scholarships and mentors for at-risk young people in Australia.” The not-for-profit has conducted a number of events in recent years to helps raise funds to build homes and provide scholarships, including the Donate Your Car program. As the name suggests, rather than selling a car for profit, people can donate their car, boat, caravan truck or motorbike to Kids Under Cover with 100 per cent of the proceeds going back into the organisation.

Entries for the auction close today at 5pm and anyone interested in bidding can email info@motorup.com.au.
