Smart traffic system gets green light

AUDI is backing a new traffic light management system aimed at making life easier for drivers and cutting vehicle emissions.

The Travolution technology has been developed by traffic management experts in Audi’s home town of Ingolstadt and the company is supporting the initiative.

This system allows traffic lights to sense vehicles in the vicinity and alter their cycle when possible to reduce stopping time.

Some of the special traffic lights are also able to send signals to cars fitted with special sensors advising the driver if a light is about to change.

They can also tell the driver what speed they would need to do in order to make it through the traffic light before the green phase ends.

When stopped, the driver is also informed of how long they will need to wait until the light goes green again.

A network of 46 intelligent lights has been installed in the centre of Ingolstadt. Audi is providing more than 20 A5 and A6 Avant models for the study.
