Astra gets 60th anniversary treatment too

BY DAVID HASSALL | 20th May 2008

HOLDEN’S Astra is the latest model to get the 60th Anniversary limited-edition treatment, with an amazing package that will save buyers thousands of dollars.

As well as being priced $1000 less than the regular entry-level 1.8-litre five-door Astra CD, the Anniversary model also adds electronic stability control and 15-inch alloy wheels (which are not available as individual options), while on-road costs are included in the price.

The Astra 60th Anniversary Special Edition is priced from $20,990 drive-away for the manual (add $2000 for the auto), while an auto-only wagon version is priced from $25,790 (not drive-away).

They are available nationally from June 1 and are the latest in a line of special-value models from Holden to celebrate its 60th anniversary in Australia, following Captiva, Rodeo and Commodore versions that went on sale from May 1.

The Astra arrives as General Motors in Europe celebrates the production last week of the 10 millionth Astra at GM’s production line in Bochum, Germany.

Not all Astras have been built at Bochum – the model is produced in eight plants on three continents – but that is where the first rolled off the line on August 12, 1991.

Astra’s biggest market is the UK (119,082 last year), followed by Germany (74,226), Italy (43,128) and Spain (41,282). Sales in Australia were 17,975, almost 2000 down on the previous year.

The first-generation Astra ran from 1991-1998 and accounted for 4.2 million units, the second generation sold 3.8 million from 1998-2004 and the latest model has racked up almost two million buyers since March 2004.
