THE Astra is available with five-speed manual or four-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission. The automatic features a lock-up torque converter to maximise fuel economy at cruising speeds and has an "overdrive" fourth gear to help towards the same goal. The manual transmission delivers quieter, smoother and more precise operation through new synchromesh rings and a new maintenance-free, light-pressure hydraulic clutch. A unique four-point Neutral Torque Axis power train mounting system offers noticeable refinement through decreased vibration and lower engine idle speed. The four-speed automatic electronic control transmission features Economy, Sport and Winter modes.
