THE Lotus-tweaked Astra suspension comprises MacPherson struts at the front axle and a torsion beam with twin trailing arms at the rear. Lower suspension A-arms (or "wishbones") on the front suspension pivot on two rubber bushings attached to the rigid chassis subframe, which in turn is joined to the body via six rubber-metal bushes to provide "double isolation" from tyre noise. A stabiliser bar is also used at the front, while at the rear the 90mm diameter U-profile torsion beam provides an anti-roll function. It is a compact design that maximises room in the luggage compartment.
