Astra Equipe'd for action

HOLDEN has responded to the recently facelifted Ford Laser and Mazda 323 by introducing a value pack version of the Astra sedan and hatch.

Based on the entry-level Astra City sedan and hatch, the Astra Equipe offers $2500 worth of extra features - air conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels, a single CD player and Equipe badging - for $1500 over the cost of the standard model.

The Astra Equipe, of which just 2000 examples will be sold, is priced at $21,420 in manual form and $23,270 as auto.

Power comes from 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 90kW.

Other standard features include power steering, six-speaker sound system, power mirrors, speed sensitive intermittent wipers, multi-function display, dual airbags, pyrotechnic front seat belt pre-tensioners and a patented clutch pedal break-away system.

"Astra sets the benchmark in its segment for dynamic styling, great ergonomics, solid construction, safety performance and real Holden-style driveability," Holden's marketing manager, small and medium cars, Michael King said.

"Given those credentials, it's not surprising that demand for the entire Holden Astra range has been very strong indeed - so much so that sales have reached record levels in recent months.

"With this great value Equipe package, we're helping to make sure they stay that way." The Astra notched up 3934 sales until the end of March, placing it second in the small car category behind the Toyota Corolla (4727 sales).
