HOLDEN has taken the wraps off its all-new VU Commodore ute at the Sydney Motor Show. To be launched early in the new year, Holden claims the ute is a "mix of sports styling, performance and practicality".
The first Commodore ute in a decade delivers a world first in having independent rear suspension, formerly the exclusive domain of passenger cars.
Holden says IRS ensures the VU ute delivers passenger car levels of ride and handling.
The high-performance SS and S models were on display, a reflection of Holden's intention to position the ute as a lifestyle vehicle as much as a workhorse.
The prototype version of HSV's VU Maloo ute was also on display.
Holden describes the ute's styling as demonstrating "a clear sports/recreational design theme, highlighted by flowing, rounded lines".
The Commodore ute has a unique flush-fitting tonneau cover and more cargo carrying capacity than the old VS model.
Also shown for the first time was the 2001 Astra small car range, now powered by a new generation 1.8-litre engine designed and developed by Australian engineers for global markets. Engine power is up 5kW to 90kW.
Further changes include "drive by wire" electronic throttle and a close-coupled catalytic converter.
The 2001 Holden Jackaroo also debuted, with wide track suspension and chassis now fitted to the SE and Monterey models, complete with more aggressive wheel-arch flares.
Also coming is a Rodeo Space Cab 4x4 LT Sport.
