Commodore exports to rise

HOLDEN plans to export 28,000 cars this year an increase of 7000 cars over 1999, and it may soon add Japan and South Africa to its export market list.

The company plans to enlarge its export base in the Middle East by adding Lebanon and Syria to its markets. It also wants to add Commodore wagons to the export model line-up.

The chairman and chief executive of Holden Limited, Mr Peter Hanenberger, said the company was waiting on a February decision as to whether it would start Commodore exports to South Africa.

Sales of Commodores in South Africa, where it would be price competitive with local offerings, would provide a strong base for the Commodore 4x4 seven-plus seater if it is approved. Holden believes the 4x4 Commodore would be ideal for African markets.

Mr Hanenberger also believes the Commodore will sell strongly as a large sedan in Japan. He said the Commodore had "researched well" with consumers there.

Commodores, because of the large interior package, are pitched as chauffeur-driven cars in South America.

Mr Hanenberger is also looking at exports to the UK, which would be more likely to occur before any exports to the US.
