NOT all Rodeo variants are available with an automatic transmission but a sensible number are.
The LT Sport 4x4 crew-cab is one of them and when powered by the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel it makes for a smooth and effortless driving experience.
The auto is a four-speed - PRND2L - with lock-up torque converter clutch. Auto transmissions on turbo-diesels are a good combination for city driving as they allow you to extract the most form the engine by keeping the boost on for longer.
However, an auto does not provide much engine braking when compared to a manual gearbox and the test vehicle was noticeabley reliant on the brakes to wash off speed when approaching corners or on downhill runs.
If towing or off-roading is the main use for the vehicle then consider the option of auto transmission with this in mind.
The 4x4 LT Sport has a two-stage transfer case and auto front hubs and can be shifted into high four at speeds of up to 100km. The transfer case gear lever is close to the driver's left knee and is easily knocked into four-wheel drive when getting onboard.
