HOLDEN'S Statesman offers an interior comparable in space to the long-wheelbase S-class Mercedes-Benz for a mere fraction of the money. It also offers an excellent driving experience, even if the ultimate dynamics are well below Mercedes-Benz quality. But the WH Series II changes, particularly those affecting the rear suspension, have improved the car so that it tracks more securely while continuing to offer the smooth ride that has been a recognisable quality since the first of the independent suspended long-wheelbase Holdens. For a slight price premium over the similarly equipped short-wheelbase Calais, the Statesman is a lot of car for the money.
