The dashboard is sourced from a right-hand drive Chevy Blazer and has been stretched, rather crudely, to fit the Suburban

Leather seats throughout offer a luxury feel on LT petrol models but are not overly supportive. Front pews are electrically adjustable

Base petrol and base and LS turbo-diesel models come with a front bench seat

All models have dual system air-conditioning.

The large steering wheel contains an airbag but can only be adjusted for rake not reach

There is no clock on the dash. You have to turn on the radio to tell the time. The rear view mirror contains an LCD compass

It is easy to switch from rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive high or low range by pressing an electronic switch on the dash

The rear window opens separately for quick loading on the LT's horizontally split tailgate. It can be released remotely by a switch on the dash

Base and LS models have vertically split doors at the back

The 1500 Series 5.7-litre iron block V8 produces 190kW and 447Nm. The 2500 Series turbo-diesel 6.5-litre V8 is good for 145kW and 583Nm

Petrol versions are LPG-compatible and major services are scheduled at 160,000km intervals

Turbo-diesel versions come with super heavy duty axles and suspension, eight-stud wheels and improved brake package. Anti- lock brakes are standard

Depending on State regulations, petrol Suburbans can tow 2720kg and turbo-diesels 3400kg

The fuel tank holds 159 litres

At 5.5m long, 1.9m wide and 1.8m high, the Suburban stands tall in any company
