HOLDEN NOVA 4D SEDAN (1991-1993)
THE Nova was a failed Toyota Corolla clone released in mid 1989 and revised in '91 with a 76kW twin cam, 1.6-litre engine. Transmissions are either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. SLX equipment levels are sparse but does includes power steering. Now Nova is cheaper than an equivalent Corolla.

NISSAN PULSAR 4D SEDAN (1991-1995)
Nissan's N14 Pulsar Ti appeals with its gutsy 105kW 2.0-litre twin-cam engine that also happens to be economical and very reliable, lush equipment levels, a happy handling/roadholding/ride compromise, good build quality and a surprisingly modern cabin. This generation won a major car of the year award.

DAIHATSU APPLAUSE 4D SEDAN (1991-1998)
THE universally ignored Applause's sedan-like styling disguises its rear hatch, which happens to be large and accommodating. The 1.6-litre, 77kW engine and low overall weight of the Applause produces reasonable performance and very good fuel economy. Equipment levels are also reasonable.

FORD LASER 4D SEDAN (1992-1994)
REGULAR updates kept the Laser competitive with its rivals and popular with buyers. The KF Series II Ghia is only available with a four-speed automatic transmission and a 1.8-litre, fuel- injected engine which produces 76kW. This was the last Aussie built Laser. The subsequent KJ came from Mazda in Japan.
