THE Type R features a new, short-throw, close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with around 40 per cent reduced shift effort. The transmission uses multiple large-capacity synchronisers - triple cones on first and second and double cones on third through to sixth. Shift stroke is shortened to just 45mm. The Type R transmission is more efficient - the same weight, yet 20mm shorter than the five-speed manual it replaces. It has a new wide-angle, clutch-torsion mechanism with two-stage hysteresis to reduce the gear rattling common in six-speed transmissions. The Type R also has a short-stroke clutch pedal for quicker shifting, a hydraulic damper integrated with the master cylinder for reduced clutch vibration and new clutch-friction material for improved take-off feel. A torque induction-type helical limited slip differential assists traction and reduces understeer.
