Drive-away pricing for Hyundai i30 Hybrid

HYUNDAI has announced drive-away pricing for its economical i30 Sedan Hybrid this week, targeting – and in many cases undercutting – the Toyota Corolla Hybrid sedan in the process.

In October, Hyundai announced retail pricing for the revised petrol-electric sedan of $33,000.

Now, the South Korean importer will offer the entry-grade i30 Sedan Hybrid nationally from $35,990 drive-away – undercutting the comparable Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid sedan (from $36,133 d/a) in New South Wales, the Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia.

Higher specified Elite and Premium variants of the i30 Sedan Hybrid will go on sale from next month (February 2024) with pricing to be advised closer to that time.

Hyundai says it has strong supply of the i30 Sedan Hybrid available with 200 units on water (arriving this month) and another 400 due in February. Wait times on new orders are currently less than three months.

In a quick head-to-head comparison of the Hyundai i30 Sedan Hybrid and Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid sedan we note several advantages in the former, including a more powerful driveline.

The i30 Sedan Hybrid features a 1.6-litre petrol-electric hybrid driveline driving the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The unit develops 104kW of power and 147Nm of torque while returning a lab-tested fuel consumption average of 3.9 litres per 100km.

For the Corolla Hybrid sedan, we find a larger 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid driveline again driving the front wheels, this time via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The unit develops 103kW of power and 142Nm of torque and returns an identical fuel consumption figure of 3.9L.100km.

Both models are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. However, the Hyundai ups the ante with a leather-appointed steering wheel rim and gear shift knob (PVC on the Toyota), dual-zone climate control, and rain-sensing wipers.

Speaking on the arrival of the i30 Sedan Hybrid late last year, Hyundai Motor Company Australia chief executive officer Ted Lee said the first-ever hybridised i30 is set to shake up the small car segment.

“Our sporty i30 Sedan has been a popular small car in the Australian market since replacing the Elantra nameplate in October 2020,” he said.

“(The) 2024 i30 Sedan is set to build on the model’s momentum with its refreshed style, revised line-up featuring new technology and, in an i30 first, Hybrid powertrain efficiency.”
