Hyundai reveals more of its Q car

HYUNDAI’S strip tease of its electrified Ioniq sedan continues with the release of two more sketches – one of the car’s side profile and the other of the dash layout – and a few morsels of information.

The latest batch comes just eight days after the first murky image of the vehicle that is close to production.

Tucked in the corner of the exterior rendering is the new Ioniq logo with a disjointed Q that is said to represent “a visual breakthrough, acknowledging the fresh new approach of this advanced, low-emission model”.

To be fully revealed in South Korea in January ahead of a European appearance at the Geneva motor show in March, the Prius-fighter is claimed to be the first car in the world to offer a choice of three electrified powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric.

Hyundai Australia has confirmed it will take the conventional hybrid version in the second half of 2016, but is still working on the business case for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The full electric version is out, at least for foreseeable future.

The images show a smooth but conventional-looking four-door car that Hyundai says has been carefully wrought to minimise wind resistance.

This proposition is backed up by what look like flat-spoked alloy wheels – a design commonly employed on wind-cheating vehicles to cut drag.

Although it cannot be seen in the image, Hyundai has stated that the Ioniq will get Hyundai’s signature hexagonal grille, apparently topped by “an attractive gloss-black element that extends outwards to meet distinctive new headlamps featuring integrated C-position lights”.

And in case you were wondering, the exterior colour supposedly is “evocative of fog about to lift”. We thought it was silver.

The interior graphic shows a simple but elegant interior layout that Hyundai says employs environmentally friendly materials, which apparently “convey a futuristic yet warm cabin ambience that will appeal to a new generation of motorists”.

A blue theme prevails, with air vents, instruments, start button and other items getting ice-blue surrounds.

The instruments on this version of Ioniq include both fuel gauge and battery charge meter, indicating it is one of the hybrids.
