JAGUAR launched its jaw-dropping F-Type convertible range a year ago with the promise that a coupe would follow, but not only has it arrived with a hard-top, the $219,130 flagship R Coupe has broken the 400kW barrier too.

Australian sportscar shoppers are typically more keen on closed-top coupes compared to drop-top cabriolets, so Jaguar predicts the second F-Type variant will boost sales by more than double, but it will still face stiff competition from the venerable Porsche 911 and forthcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe.

Of course having a shrieking 404kW supercharged V8 under its long bonnet and dreamboat looks will help in that fight.

When we reviewed the F-Type S Convertible earlier this year just about the only negative thing we could find to say about it related to its minimal boot, but what you see here is a variant of the pretty Jag with no cumbersome roof mechanism and a hatchback.

After a 12 month wait, could the resulting 407 litres of boot-space complete the formula and make this F-Type the perfect sportscar?

Coupe and S Coupe variants take care of the more affordable end of the range, but we hopped in the flagship R Coupe to find out.
