Jeep delivers upgraded 2005 Wrangler

BY MARTON PETTENDY AND TERRY MARTIN | 14th Jan 2005

JEEP has introduced its 2005 Wrangler, which features an upgraded six-speed manual transmission and a limited-issue Renegade model.

Wrangler's new six-slot manual features hard-finished gears for improved gear-change quality and refinement, while lower first and higher top (sixth) gear ratios are claimed to deliver brisker acceleration and quieter, more economical highway cruising.

Priced from $31,990, the latter version of the iconic American-built rock-hopper takes onboard cruise control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead compass and temperature gauge, side steps, unique alloy wheels, a dual-top roof (with soft or hard-top option) and Renegade badging – a claimed $4000 worth of gear for $2000 above the standard-issue, $29,990 Wrangler.

There is no change forthcoming to the 130kW/305Nm 4.0-litre inline-six petrol engine and just 300 Wrangler Renedages will be made available - in black, bright silver, light khaki and patriot blue.

The previous Wrangler Sport model was priced from $35,990 and the 2005 Wrangler line-up now reads: Wrangler Sport six-speed manual $29,990 Wrangler Sport four-speed auto $31,990 Wrangler limited edition Renegade six-speed manual $31,990 Wrangler limited edition Renegade four-speed auto $33,990 As at November 2004, 813 Jeep Wranglers had been sold in Australia, representing a 35 per cent increase over the same period in 2003 and making Australia the most popular Wrangler market outside the US.
