Paris show: Kia Pops up with scissor doors

KIA has released more images – but few extra details – on the zany ‘Pop’ all-electric city-car concept it will unveil at this week’s Paris motor show.

Now confirmed to feature a pair of scissor doors that are hinged at their top front corners, the three-seater micro-car concept is slightly longer than Toyota’s conceptually similar iQ, but at three metres long remains shorter than Kia’s smallest model, the Picanto, which is no longer sold in Australia.

“A concept car like the Pop could only have come from us,” said the chief designer of Kia Europe Gregory Guillaume, who helped style the Pop under the direction of chief design officer Peter Schreyer.

“Designers very rarely have the opportunity to start from a clean sheet of paper and it’s great to be in a position to operate with such freedom.”The Pop EV will make its world debut on Thursday (September 30) alongside the European debut of Kia’s new Optima mid-size sedan, which will be a belated replacement for Kia’s unloved Magentis in Australia late this year.

Kia will also display a mild-hybrid Sportage concept that is claimed to emit just 108g/km of CO2.
