THE sole transmission available on petrol Freelanders is a five-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic sequential manual shift operation. The transmission features a torque converter and gear ratios designed to suit the Freelander's requirements both on and off the road. It also has adaptive programming that enables it to alter shift patterns according to the driver's accelerator use and the prevailing terrain. Td4 turbo-diesel (five-door only) models also have this Jatco auto available, however, the standard transmission is a five-speed Getrag manual featuring synchromesh on reverse and dual-cone synchromesh on first and second gears. Freelander uses a viscous-coupled permanent four-wheel drive system. Basically, viscous fluid contained in a tube between two centre bearings of the propshaft heats up when the front wheels start to spin and locks it, effectively increasing drive torque to the rear wheels.
