FOUR years since it launched and the Range Rover Evoque can finally make sense of its name, although it could have also been called the ‘Provoque’.

The Evoque Convertible might seem to be designed to evoke an opinion, or provoke an argument, given that soft-top off-roaders have tended to be the reserve of a Suzuki Vitara or Toyota RAV4, although the Jeep Wrangler dabbled in the concept. For Land Rover loyalists, a fashion-focused four-wheel drive with a fabric roof could be a step too far.

All of which matters nought now.

This baby Range Rover has been a huge success for the brand, but a duo of questions remain up for analysis with this new body style: has the Evoque Convertible been properly engineered to mix soft-topping with off-roading and is the circa-$15,000 pricing impost over the hard-top worth it for a seemingly humble four-cylinder petrol and diesel offering that now starts from $85,000?
