Lexus lobs special-edition RX SUVs

BY ROBBIE WALLIS | 9th May 2018

HOT on the heels of the seven-seat RX L variants, Lexus has expanded its large-SUV range with the special-edition Crafted variants, based on the Luxury model grade and kicking off from $81,351 plus on-roads for the RX300.

Offered in five-seat guise with the choice of all three powertrain options including turbo four-cylinder RX300, V6 RX350 and hybrid RX450h, all versions add $7100 to the price of the Luxury, with the latter two coming in at $88,521 and $97,260, respectively.

The Crafted is differentiated by the inclusion of black accents on the grille, foglight bezels, mirror caps and rear bumper, while the 20-inch alloy wheels gain a black coating.

Inside, the Crafted gains a moonroof, colour head-up display, 12.3-inch infotainment screen up from 8.0-inches, and 15-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.

Only 300 examples of the Crafted editions will be brought to Australia.

According to Lexus Australia chief executive Scott Thompson, the extra specification will attract a wider range of buyers to the RX range.

“The additional luxury and value of the stylish Lexus RX Crafted will attract a wider audience to a vehicle noted for its practicality, convenience, spaciousness and easy manoeuvrability,” he said.

No changes have been made to the powertrains in the line-up, which consist of the 175kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, 221kW/370Nm 3.5-litre V6 and 230kW hybrid V6.

Active safety technologies standard across the range include active cruise control, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, reversing camera, pre-collision safety system with pedestrian detection, autonomous emergency braking and 10 airbags.

Other standard kit includes leather-accented trim, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition, power tailgate and wireless charging.

Through the first four months of 2018, Lexus has recorded 718 sales of the RX, up 22.7 per cent over the same period.

That figure is enough to place it fourth in the $70,000-plus large SUV segment, behind the Range Rover Sport (910), BMW X5 (890) and Audi Q7 (743).
