Mahindra BE 6e and XEV 9e EV duo unveiled

BY MATT BROGAN | 28th Nov 2024

MAHINDRA has announced details of its forthcoming BE 6e and XEV 9e electric SUVs, the duo the latest from the Indian brand’s Electric Origin series of motor vehicles underpinned by the firm’s Inglo EV architecture.

While the pair is currently slated only for the Indian market (with customer deliveries to commence in February or March), it is likely other right-hand drive markets – including Australia – could see the Mahindra BE 6e and XEV 9e in showrooms as early as mid-next year.

“Mahindra plans a phased, calibrated international rollout of the Electric Origin series, starting with right-hand drive (RHD) markets. We will make announcements of launch at the appropriate time,” a spokesperson for Mahindra Australia told GoAuto.

The BE 6e measures 4371mm in length, 1907mm in width and 1627mm in height while riding on a 2775mm wheelbase – dimensions that make it similar to the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid.

The model features a rear-mounted electric motor outputting 170kW or 210kW (grade dependent) and 380Nm, each supplied by a 59.0kWh or 79.0kWh battery pack (again grade dependent).

Mahindra quotes a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds for the BE 6e.

Meanwhile, the larger XEV 9e shares the same wheelbase, and body width as the BE 6e, but is 4789mm in length and 1694mm in height.

The model shares the same powertrain as the BE 6e but is slightly slower in the sprint to 100km/h at 6.8 seconds.

Both ride on MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension with semi-active damping at all four corners. Braking is by wire and an all-disc arrangement while the steering is electrically assisted.

Mahindra quotes a driving range of up to 682km for the BE 6e and up to 656km for the XEV 9e. Both may be charged via a 7.3- or 11.2kW AC domestic input or (up to) 175kW DC fast charger.

“The insight that inspired our brand idea is rooted in the most powerful human emotion – love, which is eternal – inspires our deepest choices and defines who we are,” said Mahindra electric automobile joint managing director and automotive sector president Veejay Nakra.

“Our electric origin SUVs, BE 6e and XEV 9e are about Unlimit Love that will inspire our customers to live a life without limits, filled with experiences that will make them feel alive.

“Crafted for unmissable presence, unparalleled technology and unrivalled performance, our electric origin SUVs will set new global benchmarks.

“The BE 6e, with its edgy, athletic silhouette and race-inspired agility, is designed for those who thrive on performance and adrenaline while the XEV 9e exudes sophistication with its suave SUV coupe design, seamlessly blending indulgent luxury with dynamic performance.”

While the styling of the pair is indeed individual to the body style, there are differences in the styling of the 19-inch alloy wheels, and interior layout that sees the BE 6e clad with a “race ready” digital display, sporty twin-spoke steering wheel, and dual-screen (infotainment and instrumentation) panel.

The XEV 9e is differentiated by a larger (but still split) 43.3-inch combination display with a third screen for passengers, digitised instrumentation, and a familiar infotainment array.

Both are available optionally with a 16-speaker harman/kardon audio system.

Safety inclusions are extensive, with Level 2+ self-driving capabilities, a 360-degree camera system, and driver assistance features aided by the standard fitment of camera, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.

“The BE 6e and XEV 9e are the next Indian icons that will be world beaters,” said Mahindra electric automobile joint managing director and automotive product development president R Velusamy.

“The difference between a vehicle that is made-electric and these two Born Electric SUVs is that one you have seen before, and the other one is unlike anything you have seen before.

“One just about matches industry standards of performance while one sets a new standard for performance in the industry. One has tech that will soon be history, while one has tech that will make everything history.

“These two products built on our ground up revolutionary electric origin architecture Inglo and powered by MAIA, the fastest automotive mind in the world embody Mahindra’s vision of Unlimit India, setting new global benchmarks.”

In the Indian market, the Mahindra BE 6e is priced from 1.89 million Rupees ($A34,600) and the XEV 9e from 2.19 million Rupees ($A40,100).

Australian delivery timing, specification, and pricing will be announced in due course.
