MORE expensive SUV models by Maserati’s own admission result in lower volume and higher profit margins, and its Levante debutant aims to snuggle into the medium ground of the large-and-premium end of the high-riding segment.
The Maserati Levante has arrived without a sub-$100K entry model to poach buyers from the likes of the Audi Q7 and BMW X5. Nor is there even a $110K model grade to challenge what is seen as the sportiest contender in the segment, the Porsche Cayenne.
At the same time, the five-seat-only Italian does not trouble a $170K Range Rover or a $420K Bentley Bentayga, despite other models such as the $331K Quattroporte GTS selling in that space.
The SUV that is destined to make up 59 per cent of local Maserati volume this year is focused on enhancing profitability and boosting volume but without selling to the masses.
It is a balancing act that arrives with a diesel-only three-tier range from $139,990 plus on-road costs.
