DEPENDING on the perspective, Maserati is either bold and clever, or unqualified and uncompetitive, to openly admit its lightly facelifted Quattroporte MY17 range will not rival other upper-large sedans with the latest technology.

While the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz draw swords in the fight over whether the forthcoming A8, brand new 7 Series or soon-updated S-Class will offer the best semi-autonomous steering and driver assistance technologies, Maserati is openly content with the basics.

For the Quattroporte MY17 that means adopting autonomous emergency braking (AEB), forward collision and lane departure warnings, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring for the new 8.4-inch touchscreen, and that is all.

The steering wheel is for the driver to love doing the driving in this quintessentially Italian ‘proper’ driver’s limousine, according to the brand. So is that claim correct or just smart spin?
