MASERATI’s bid to boost Australian sales with a refreshed and broadened range seems to be paying off.

At the current rate, the Italian luxury car-maker will equal its best annual sales record of 201 (in 2008) by the end of this month and it is largely thanks to its top-selling model - the Quattroporte.

The first two variants to touch down in Australia were the twin-turbo petrol V6 S and V8 GTS, but completing the family of three is the freshly landed Turbo Diesel.

That’s right - Maserati has finally embraced compression-ignition engines, but don’t think that the move to diesel power marks the end of Italian passion for trident-badged cars.

You still get the toys, comfort and chassis of the petrol brethren but at under $200,000 and a fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100km, this Quattroporte could be the pick of the bunch.
