NISSAN N14 PULSAR 4D SEDAN (1991-1995)
A SMART little car, and initially Australian-made, the N14 Pulsar proved to be a tough opponent for its rivals. Its lively 1.6 16-valve engine mated well with a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic driving the front wheels. Radio/cassette standard. Well made, a good performer, comfortable, dependable and refined, this makes a durable used small car buy.

MITSUBISHI CC LANCER 4D SEDAN (1992-1996)
FULLY imported, and powered by a 1.5 carburettor-fed 12-valve engine, economical running was its forte. A three-speed auto or five-speed manual drives the front wheels. Power steering was standard from May 1995. The Lancer is not as roomy, comfortable, dynamic or refined as the BA 323 or N14 Pulsar.

HOLDEN LF NOVA 4D SEDAN (1991-1994)
A cloned Toyota Corolla and built in Australia, the Nova has a spirited 1.6 16-valve engine available with either a four-speed auto or five- speed manual gearbox. Comfort and refinement are OK, but the steering is light and rear-seat room tight. The Nova is better-buying than the equivalent Corolla because it has a lower resale value.

FORD KH LASER 4D SEDAN (1991-1994)
ANOTHER clone, this time of the Mazda BG 323, although styled very differently and made locally. It has the same 1.6 16-valve engine and choice of three-speed auto or five-speed manual, and drives just as well too. Power steering also became standard. Howerver this Laser's ungainly styling lost it many friends.
