IT’S DIFFICULT to see Mazda going wrong with its new CX-7 SUV. Priced close to upper-level Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 as well as Mitsubishi’s new Outlander, the Mazda has a dynamism and class about it that almost elevates it to the next level. It is stylishly presented, generously endowed with interior space, nicely put together and, with a lively 2.4-litre turbo engine borrowed from Mazda3 and Mazda6 MPS models, very fleet-footed out on the road. Like most SUVs today, thoughts of off-road adventures are even further in the background, but the on-demand 4WD system is effective in staying safe on greasy roads and operates more invisibly than such 4WD arrangements have in the past. The CX-7’s only real shortcoming is its thirst for premium unleaded. Maybe a turbo-diesel could be in its future?
