First look: Mazda5 to replace Premacy

MAZDA will present its Premacy-replacing compact people-mover, dubbed Mazda5, atthis month's Paris motor show - but don't expect to see it in Australian Mazda showrooms.

Unlikely to come to Australia after the Premacy was withdrawn around 18 months ago due to slow sales, Mazda5 closely follows the design theme heralded by the MX-Flexa concept shown previously.

A rival for the likes of Renault’s Scenic and the Holden Zafira, Mazda5 also happens to be the fifth new generation global model since the company overhauled its production.



While all Mazda5s feature two wide-opening sliding side doors, European market versions will feature two common-rail turbo-diesel engines (on top of two petrol engines) and the availability of either seven seats or a unique "6 + One" interior arrangement comprising six seats and additional cargo space in the centre.

Mazda also promises driving dynamics "that customers have come to appreciate from all Mazda new generation vehicles".

Mazda5 is not to be confused with Mazda’s previous space wagon concept, Washu, which should replace in late 2005 the ageing but still useful MPV large people-mover.
