Mazda updates MX-5 style for 2020

A STALWART of the rear-drive sportscar segment for the past three decades, Mazda is set to treat its iconic MX-5 roadster to a facelift in 2020, though no mechanical enhancements are on the cards according to the Japanese brand.

With prices and exact specifications yet to be announced, the new model is expected to land on Aussie shores early next year with the biggest visual change being the availability of Mazda’s ‘Polymetal Grey Metallic’ paint pinched from the Mazda3 hatch.

According to Mazda, the new paint scheme will highlight the MX-5’s “flowing form” and follow the brand’s car-as-art philosophy.

Most of the other changes will be confined to the interior, all designed to increase the sense of luxury across the range.

The RF GT models score Burgundy Nappa leather with contrasting grey stitching while the rest of the range will get extra perforations on the black and tan leather seats to “give a sporty texture and boost to comfort”.

The GT range will also get metal scuff plates to minimise damage getting in and out while all models will adopt a new-look key fob and updated Mazda badging.

Engine and performance-wise, nothing changes in comparison with the 2019 model year, meaning buyers will still have the option of the 97kW/152Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder or the 135kW/205Nm 2.0-litre.

Both engines can be paired with ether a six-speed automatic transmission or a slick-shifting six-speed manual, both of which also remain unchanged.

To the end of November 2019, 421 MX-5s have been sold, marking a 47 per cent drop on sales compared to the same time last year.
