NO, the Mazda MX-5 SE isn’t a snorting, WRX-eating beast like its Australian-developed predecessor, the SP. Rather, it’s an MX-5 enhanced, with improved engine response, even more finely-tuned handling and the intrinsic sense of balance that has made the MX-5 the much-loved almost-minimalist sports car it is today. Importantly, the essence of the MX-5 remains intact with the SE. You’d need to look a long way – and probably spend a lot more money – to find a better way of maximising your driving experience. It’s about as much fun as can be crammed into two seats.
