THE V6 engine is basically a large-bore version of the Mazda MPV powerplant. It produces maximum power of 150 kW at 6000 rpm and a torque of 266 Nm at 4700 rpm, figures which place it at the head of the soft-roader pack. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine produces 97 kW of power at 5400 rpm and 183 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm - figures outdone by the Honda CR-V. Mazda had overall responsibility for the engines during development of Tribute and Escape. Mazda designed the overall packaging, intake and exhaust, air cleaner, intake manifold, engine mounts, battery and alternator.
