Mercedes-AMG A 45 Limited Edition arrives

BY PETER BARNWELL | 6th Dec 2024

THROW an extra $7400 at the price tag of Mercedes-AMG’s A 45 S 4matic+ hot hatch and it puts you behind the wheel of the Limited Edition version that is available now from $128,400 +ORCs.

Essentially, the ask brings sexy green paint with a racing stripe, aero add-ons and rear spoiler, black and yellow body hardware highlights, and zhuzhed-up interior; but the same powertrain as the derivative model.

Mercedes-AMG says the Limited Edition, the most expensive hot hatch sold here, is set to make hearts beat even quicker with the additional model combining stunning performance with an even more overt visual presence.

It does not have the segment all to itself, however, as competition may come from the cheaper Audi RS 3 in sedan and Sportback (from under $100K), the more powerful rear-wheel drive BMW M2, and even Porsche’s entry level Cayman at four grand more.

But balanced against this the all-wheel drive AMG hot hatch has enough going for it to be highly sought after by fans not the least its AMG GT-inspired appearance.

The model’s arresting green metallic paintwork, black front to back racing stripe and black and yellow accented exterior trim features a swathe of racing-inspired external enhancements while inside, several key trim and specification updates add an even sportier touch to the performance-focused cabin.

The stunning Green Light Magno paintwork accentuated by the number 45 on the side has not previously been available in the compact class and was sourced directly from the Mercedes-AMG GT.

The overall look is completed by edition-exclusive 19-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels in matt black with contrasting yellow flange and rim spokes.

AMG developed an Aerodynamics Package to add further visual appeal with the dual benefit of providing a tangible improvement to driving characteristics.

The package incorporates a fixed AMG rear wing and special add-on parts that are more than merely aesthetic. It was developed in the Mercedes-AMG wind tunnel to increase downforce and improve high speed handling while also imparting a motorsport-inspired look.

Other details receiving the AMG touch are gloss black brake callipers for the AMG high-performance braking system complete with a white AMG logo, a silver-chrome fuel cap finished with the AMG logo, and a light projection of the AMG crest onto the road or pavement when entering or exiting the vehicle.

Taking a close look inside we find sports-inspired black AMG Performance seats in Artico leather and Microcut micro-fibre with yellow decorative stitching which extends to the door panels and instrument panel.

Naturally an AMG Performance leather and Microcut steering wheel is fitted featuring yellow decorative stitching while aluminium trim elements with AMG pattern and yellow AMG lettering add further accents to the interior.

AMG branding in yellow continues throughout the interior on door sills, floor mats, and elsewhere.

The model remains powered by a high boost 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine cranking 310kW and 500Nm that Mercedes-AMG says offers spontaneous response.

It can propel the compact sports car from 0-100 km/h in as little as 3.9 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 270km/h.

Keeping all this in check is variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive with AMG Torque Control (torque vectoring) that are said to make a significant contribution to dynamic driving.

Mercedes-AMG technicians explain the rear axle drive contains two electronically controlled multi-plate clutches, each connected to a drive shaft on the rear axle which allows fully variable “driving force” between the front and rear axles and selectively left to right at the rear wheels.
