BUYERS have embraced the third-generation A-Class like no other model in the Mercedes-Benz small-car line-up since its 1998 inception, selling up a storm on the back of low-slung styling, sporty dynamics, and accessible pricing.

Critics, however, have been less kind about the baby Benz’s punishing ride and sub-par cabin quality, but the Germans say they’ve addressed both issues with the Series II facelift.

We drive the base A180 to see if they are right.
