AUDI 80 4D SEDAN (1992-1995)
FRONT-wheel drive mated to a four-speed auto or five-speed manual, the 80 is a solid, affordable alternative. Like the Benz, it suffers from high gearing, giving sluggish city performance, but also is sturdily built, goes well on the highway and still looks modern. Air-con and central locking are standard.

JAGUAR XJ6 4D SEDAN (1987-1992)
WELL proven straight six, 3.6-litre engine driving the rear wheels through a four-speed auto. Traditional British luxury - leather trim, walnut dash. Good performance, great ride comfort but notorious for unreliability. Anti-lock brakes, air- conditioning, central locking and power steering are standard.

TOYOTA CRESSIDA 4D SEDAN (1990-1993)
TOP of the Toyota range until replaced by the Lexus. Powerful 3.0-litre, twin cam straight six drives the rear wheels through a four-speed auto. Quiet and smooth with ABS, climate control, alloy wheels, cruise control, radio/cassette/CD player, central locking and leather trim. Good value.
