THE introduction of the 4.3-litre V8-powered CLK 430 in 1999 gave Mercedes-Benz a useful edge over BMW's 3 Series coupe as the biggest engine offered in the latter is a six-cylinder unit. The 4.3-litre unit can also be found under the bonnet of the E-class and S-class. External modifications were kept to a minimum - indicator repeaters on the mirrors being the most obvious change. The CLK 430 also features chunky 17-inch alloy wheels with low-profile rubber to distinguish it from its lesser siblings and provide high levels of grip.
