ONE of the CLK's outstanding features is without doubt its grunty V8 engine, which provides a healthy shove in the back when provoked, accompanied by a wonderful bellow from the exhaust. It is mated to Mercedes-Benz's smooth-shifting five-speed auto, which can be used as a manual when the mood calls for it. The C-class-derived chassis is up to the mark in terms of ride and handling - although it breaks no new ground in either respect. Its muscular yet understated appearance is appealing, as is the classy cabin.
