Mercedes recalls E-Class coupe

BY MIKE COSTELLO | 21st Jan 2013

MERCEDES-Benz has recalled a small number of 2012 E-Class two-door coupes due to a possible airbag fault.

The campaign is part of a global recall of selected C207 E-Class two-door models, but affects just seven examples sold in Australia between April 1 and June 30, 2012.

A notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the right-side curtain airbag may deflate prematurely following deployment, increasing risk of injury in an accident.

The fault is caused by a change in the supplier’s production process, with a different stitching pattern leaving a weak point in the bag, which could tear following gas inflation.

The risk is heightened in high ambient temperatures.

Affected owners will be contacted and asked to have the affected airbag replaced at no cost.
