Mercedes M-class update revealed

MERCEDES-Benz has released the first official images of its updated M-class, due here around December.

The updated off-roader gains 1100 new components, including redesigned bumpers, clear-lens headlamps and exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

It also features colour-coded bumpers, protective side strips and exterior mirror housings. All models gain 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.

In addition, the ML 430 will be replaced by the ML 500, which is powered by essentially the same 5.0-litre V8 used in the S500.

The addition of the 215kW engine will enable the M-class to compete head-on against the BMW X5 4.4i - which generates 210kW.

Mercedes-Benz claims the ML 500 can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.7 seconds. Visual clues that distinguish the ML 500 from its lesser siblings include different wheels and chrome trim on the radiator grille vanes, door handles and tailgate.

The range-topping ML 55 AMG will be further differentiated by a silver-painted radiator grille.

Equipment level upgrades across the range include the provision of window airbags as standard, while bi-xenon headlamps will be offered as an option.

Inside, the new M-class gains a redesigned centre console that features additional storage compartments between the front seats.

Rear passengers benefit from an improved double cupholder, illuminated ashtray, 12-volt socket and individually adjustable ventilation nozzles.
