MG MOTOR has launched its first fully electric hatchback in Australia this week, the affordable MG 4 EV landing from just $38,990 plus on-road costs – making it one of the few EVs available locally from under $40K.
The model is set to rival other Chinese newcomers, including the BYD Dolphin (from $38,890) and GWM Ora (from $39,990).
Offering what MG says is “affordable, zero-emissions motoring without compromise”, the MG 4 is available in two grades and with three battery options, delivering a driving range of up to 530km on the WLTP cycle.
"The MG 4 is a new standard for electric vehicles in Australia. MG has brought together a brilliant mix of affordability, range, and quality for Australian drivers," said MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO, Peter Ciao.
"Our MG 4 is backed with a seven-year warranty and has received a five-star ANCAP safety rating, ahead of local deliveries beginning this month. We're excited for private, fleet and rideshare drivers who'll benefit from this.
"The MG 4 has received awards from some of the UK's leading motoring experts recognising its amazing features, practicality, dynamic handling and we know it'll be embraced in the same way locally being the best-value EV currently on sale in Australia at $38,990 plus on-road costs."
The MG 4 EV is the first to use the innovative new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that will underpin a new generation of MGs, featuring rear-wheel drive, 50:50 weight distribution and thin battery technology.
Battery capacities include 51kWh, 64kWh and 77kWh to provide the MG 4 with WLTP driving ranges of 350km, 450km and 530km respectively. MG says the offering is designed to give customers the opportunity to find the most suitable specification to suit their driving needs and budget.
The mid-tier 64kWh battery is also capable of recharging at up to 140kW, meaning a charge time of only 26 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent is possible using a 150kW DC rapid charger.
Standard features include: five driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, and Custom), four regenerative braking settings – including one-pedal mode – a 10.25-inch multifunction infotainment array with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, a reversing camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, and MG’s Pilot Driver Safety Technology suite.
The MG 4 EV goes on sale locally with a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The MG 4 EV also carries MG's seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty as standard, which remains one of the longest fully transferable warranties in the country.
MG is fast becoming one of Australia’s most popular budget brands. It was Australia’s sixth best-selling in July with the ZS our third best-selling model – and our best-selling SUV. Ten per cent of all ZS variants sold were battery electric powered.
The importer says it already has 1000 orders for the MG 4 and hopes to sell three times that amount by the end of the calendar year. If it achieves that goal, the MG 4 will become one of the best-selling cars in the country behind the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and BYD Atto 3.
