FOR a while there it looked like the Mini family was set to diversify itself out of all recognition, with everything from the more orthodox three-door hatchback through to Coupe, Coupe convertible, Paceman, the 5-door and Countryman, to the most recent addition – the Clubman.

But the BMW-owned British car-maker reigned in the exploding line-up that, with the arrival of the new Convertible, is limited to five – for now.

The little rag-top is certainly not intended to become the volume seller of the range – that job has been charged to the 5-door – but with a combination of unmistakable Mini style and frivolity, with the fun of topless motoring, the Convertible is a niche model that should maintain the quirky line-up’s appeal.

But who will buy the Mini Convertible and is there anything else out there on the Australian market that can match its offer of a full convertible roof, unique looks and four seats in a compact package?
