EVOLUTION VI arrived in 1999 in Japan with big advances in aerodynamics, suspension and engine cooling, mainly by offsetting the licence plate to enlarge the front bumper openings. Drag was reduced by hemi-spherical foglight covers, while a biplane rear wing made up for the reduction in downforce caused by its smaller size. Evo VI also received a world-first titanium turbocharger to improve response and a cooling channel in the pistons for increase reliability - though power and torque figures remained unchanged. Forged front suspension knuckles and a lowered roll centre produced better tyre/road contact, while a number of rear suspension components became forged aluminium items and body stiffness was improved by 130 additional spot welds, the use of structural adhesive and some thicker-gauge panels.
