IF THERE is one thing that most environmentally friendly cars used to be very good at, it’s shouting their green credentials from the rooftops.
Think about the more famous examples of the breed, like the Toyota Prius, Holden’s Volt and the Nissan Leaf – all unmistakeably bathed in a tinge of pious green.
Lately, though, car-makers are cottoning on to the fact that customers may not want to be seen aboard rolling advertisements for planet-saving technology. Toyota’s Camry and Corolla hybrids, for example, are low-emission cars that look like… well, cars.
So it goes with Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV (or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). It looks for all the world like a regular Outlander SUV, except for a couple of minor exterior trim pieces and the rather large badges on the front flanks – but underneath it’s hiding a raft of technology gleaned from all corners of the Mitsubishi empire, including the ferocious – and lamented – Evo range.
The Japanese company has finally brought the latest version of the PHEV to Australia, and not a moment too soon, after suffering supply issues all the way through 2016 which cruelled its sales. Has the updated PHEV been worth the wait?
