MITSUBISHI had little in the way of competition in the segment when it first put the Challenger on sale in 2010.

The Triton-based wagon toiled away in the segment, overshadowed by the more prominent Pajero and overtaken by the smaller more suburban-friendly Outlander and more recently the ASX.

Fast-forward to the current crop and it has a fight on its hands from the HiLux-based Fortuner, Holden's Colorado7 and the Isuzu MU-X, as well as Ford's more expensive Ranger-based Everest.

Sharp pricing and a decent features list will get it onto shopping lists, particularly if towing and off-road pursuits are part of the plan.

Now renamed the Pajero Sport to draw from the 4WD wagon's heritage, the five-seater wagon might draw a long bow to live up to the "Sport" aspect of its badge, but off-road there's plenty to link it Pajero for ability.
