New York show: Nissan teases next Altima

NISSAN has teased the sixth-generation Altima mid-size sedan ahead of its international debut at the New York motor show next month, but its return to Australian showrooms is unlikely.

Speaking to GoAuto, Nissan Australia corporate communications manager Tony Mee said: “Nissan Australia will consider all new products as they become available, however at the moment there are no current plans to reintroduce Altima.”As previously reported, the Altima was dropped from Nissan Australia’s line-up early last year due to slowing sales, and while it is not on the cards right now, the mid-sizer could possibly make a return down the track.

Shown in sketch form, the next Altima has taken clear inspiration from the Vmotion 2.0 concept rolled out at the 2017 Detroit motor show, with the front three-quarter angle depicting a slick new look.

The latest interpretation of Nissan’s signature Vmotion grille is its boldest yet, dominating the Altima’s front end with a large black insert and silver surround, although this will likely be toned down for the production model.

Slimline LED headlights, large air intakes and alloy wheels, and creased but smooth body panels round out the futuristic design that could easily be confused with that of the Vmotion 2.0 concept.

However, recent spy shots out of the United States show that the production model should be a tamer affair with less aggressive wheelarches and traditional side mirrors.

Inside, a massive step forward is expected, with a floating central touchscreen infotainment system, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a cleaner, less cluttered centre stack to feature.

If the Altima does return Down Under, it would go toe to toe with Holden’s recently launched, imported ZB Commodore as well as the Toyota Camry, Mazda6, Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat, among others.

The new Altima will be fully revealed in New York on March 28, with official details to be confirmed at the event.
