WITH the huge success of the Toyota Cressida over the years, Nissan decided to challenge it head-on with the Maxima, which started off life as a stretched, six-cylinder Datsun Bluebird in the late 1970s. The Japan-built but US-designed Maxima arrived in mid-’90 to lukewarm reviews and sales. Based on the front-wheel drive Pintara platform, two four-door sedan models – called M and Ti – were launched, powered by a 122kW 3.0-litre fuel-injected V6 engine mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. The M included air-con, power steering, cruise control, power windows, alloy wheels and central locking, while an M-based LE version of late 1991 added a CD player and sunroof. The A30 Series II Maxima from early 1993 featured a revised grille, taillights, wheels and cabin trim. The M made way for the Executive.
