First drive: It's a king hit for Nissan's D40 Navara
BY PHILIP LORD | 30th Jul 2008
NISSAN Australia has finally launched Single Cab and King Cab versions of its D40 Navara ute, two years after the company introduced its new-generation Dual Cab.
The company claims limited production capacity globally was the reason behind not introducing the full range of D40 variants at once, with only the D40 dual-cab introduced in 2005.
Nissan kept the previous-generation Navara, the D22, on sale until emissions regulations forced it off the market in late 2006. It was then re-introduced early this year with a low-output version of the D40’s 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine (98kW and 304Nm).
While the new Single Cab and King Cab variants all use the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine already fitted to the D40 Navara, there are two output levels.
The RX Single Cab Chassis has 106kW at 4000rpm and 356Nm of torque at 2000rpm. This engine is quoted at 9.3L/100km fuel consumption on the combined cycle.
The D40 King Cab has the same 126kW/403Nm outputs as the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel Dual Cab and is quoted at 9.8L/100km combined as a manual (10.5L/100km as an auto).
The Single Cab and King Cab models come with dual-range part-time 4WD and limited-slip differential and while the Single Cab is six-speed manual only, the King Cab models are also available with an optional five-speed auto.
The RX Single Cab Chassis comes with a front bench seat for three occupants and has a payload of 1200kg and a 3000kg towing capacity.
The RX Single Cab Chassis is fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, dual airbags, cloth trim, an AM/FM radio with CD player, and a 12V power accessory socket.
The King Cab models are four-seaters with two rear-opening doors and two rear occasional-use fold down seats with three-point seatbelts.
The RX King Cab Chassis payload is more than 1100kg (manual) and 1083kg (auto), depending on tray used, while the ST-X Cab Chassis payload is 1091kg (manual) and 1065kg (auto). All King Cabs have a 3000kg towing capacity.
The King Cab Chassis RX has 16-inch alloy wheels ABS with brake assist, dual airbags, air-conditioning, a power accessory socket, cloth trim, and a body-coloured front bumper with chrome grille.
The King Cab Chassis ST-X also gets side steps, cruise control, remote central locking, power windows and mirrors, and a six-stacker MP3/CD player.
The King Cab ST-X Ute adds a rear tub with integrated tub liner, tray aluminium sports bar, rear chrome step bumper and remote fuel release.
The Single Cab and King Cab models are built in Thailand, while the D40 Navara Dual Cab continues to be sourced from Spain.
